The French (Les) painted by themselves. Nineteenth Century Moral Encyclopedia. [And] The Prism. Paris, L. Curmer, 1841-1842. 9 volumes large in-8, modern red half calf with corners, spine with 4 nerves, title, subtitle, editor and year gilt, double gilt fillet to the boards, gilt head (one nerve depressed; scattered and clear russets). Illustrated after Daumier, Daubigny, Gavarni, Grandville, T. Johannot, Bellangé and others, including 8 frontispieces, 404 [of 406, lacking 2 pl. in t.3 and one f. of the table in t.4, and 2 f. (pp.5-8) of the Prism] hors-texte figures illustrating Parisian and provincial types and nearly 1500 woodcuts in the text. Portrait of Napoleon I engraved in etching by Trimolet after Vernet, and a folding colour map drawn by Dufour. The whole, in first edition. The Prism is decorated with vignettes in the text, by the same artists. Texts by Balzac, Janin, Karr, Méry, Soulié, Petrus Borel, Monnier, Nodier, Gautier.
