GAVARNI. MEADOUS. ENGLISH PEOPLE (THEY) PAINTED... - Lot 366 - Kâ-Mondo
GAVARNI. MEADOUS. ENGLISH PEOPLE (THEY) PAINTED BY THEMSELVES. Paris, L. Curmer, 1840 [-1841]. 2 vols. in-8, half aubergine long-grained morocco with corners, smooth spine, author, tomaison and date gilt, friezes, fillets and fleurons gilt, yellow covers and spines preserved [S. David] (light and scattered foxing, browned boards). First edition of this translation of texts by English authors, including Thackeray, given by Emile de Labédollière. A sort of complement to the famous series Les Français peints par eux-mêmes, it is illustrated with 2 frontispieces and 98 plates, by the caricaturist Kenny Meadous (1790-1874), as well as numerous vignettes in the text by Gavarni. Carteret (III, 33) indicates 11 p. instead of one at the end of vol. 2: perhaps a table of engravings that Vicaire (I, 64) does not mention.
