Clémentine Hélène DUFAU (1869-1937). La... - Lot 127 - Kâ-Mondo
Clémentine Hélène DUFAU (1869-1937). La Fronde, [1898]. Lithograph in colors, signed in the plate at the bottom left, titled in the plate at the bottom right. Printed by Charles Verneau Affiches. 97 × 135 cm. (Bends and restorations on the borders). Modern frame. Promotional poster for the launch of the feminist magazine La Fronde founded and directed by Marguerite Durand (1864-1936). Trained at the Académie Julian in the studio of William Bouguereau, Clémentine Hélène Dufau exhibited in 1889 at the Salon des Artistes français. In 1898, at the request of Marguerite Durand, she designed the poster for the launch of the feminist newspaper La Fronde. From a high point in the city [Paris], women of all ages and social classes look towards the future. In solidarity, they join their hands or hold each other by the shoulder. At the side of her feminist sisters (the worker as well as the bourgeois), the young artist holds firmly her drawing board. "Superb composition of a grandiose realism and a vibrant symbolism" wrote E. de Crauzat about this poster in the newspaper L'Estampe et l'Affiche. Clementine Dufau then led a career as a painter and illustrator, winning various awards and government commissions. "In 1931, she completed her book-testament Les Trois couleurs de la lumière. In his work, she works from the writings of Rene Guénon (1886-1955), the Sâr Péladan (1858-1918) and Louis de Broglie (1892-1987) to a "feminine" and "unifying" thought. She attempts a sort of synthesis between the writings of the esoteric tradition and scientific research, particularly on resonance and color frequencies. In her 'pro-femina' advocacy, she denounces violence against women and calls for gender equality." (Franny Tachon, "Clémentine Hélène Dufau," on culture.gouv.fr/museums-in-France). A copy is kept at the Carnavalet Museum (AFF1204).
