In the taste of Mauricy GOTTLIEB (1856 -... - Lot 195 - Kâ-Mondo
In the taste of Mauricy GOTTLIEB (1856 - 1879). Portrait of a young Jew wearing his prayer shawl. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1870 (or 76 ?) at the bottom left. 35 x 27 cm. (Framing, restorations and small repaints on the background, the clothes and on the right part of the beard, small lack of paint in the lower right corner. Paper having been glued on the canvas, a brief restoration has been carried out). Very characteristic work of this artist who specialized in the representation of Jewish religious scenes and was nicknamed "the Rembrandt of Jewish painting". The figure depicted wears a prayer shawl with metallic thread embroidery, which is very characteristic of Central Europe.
