[DELLON (Charles)]. Histoire de l'Inquisition de Goa. A Amst - Lot 60
[DELLON (Charles)]. Histoire de l'Inquisition de Goa. A Amsterdam, chez P., Mortier, 1697. In-12, [8] f., 251 p., [6] f., pl., antique ivory vellum, smooth spine, modern title in ink (stains, one corner dulled, tail cap half uncovered; small worm tract and angular halo to very first f., last limin. f. worn in margin, tear without mq. p.53, soiling). A critical account of the Inquisition, by C. Dellon, a French traveler who fell victim to it during a trip to India and provides here a first-hand account. The first edition, published in Leiden in 1687 under the title "Relation de l'Inquisition de Goa", was not illustrated. The second appeared in Paris in 1688; this is the third, which ten years later proves that the interest of the curious in the practices of this severe institution has not waned. The illustration consists of 6 copper-engraved plates, including 3 fold-outs, and 2 chapter-head vignettes, one of which is repeated. As always, the title vignette is laminated. Provenance: Eugène Aubry-Vitet (1845-1930; engraved armorial bookplate).
