[Manuscript]. [Rural economics]. Mélange curieux [title on back]. Eighteenth-century manuscript consisting of a collection of notes on all sorts of subjects relating in particular to rural and domestic economics, also containing curious and satirical observations. Fort in-18 (h = 120 mm. excluding binding), approx. 300 unnumbered leaves, written in ink on r° and v°, contemporary brown calf, 4-nerved spine, fawn title page, ornate caissons, red edges (binding rubbed but not excessively so, jaws split at head, worm spots at head of spine).
Amusing chapters list characteristics or "epithets" of clerics ("carmelites... courtiers of rich devotees... cordeliers... libertines in the countryside..."), inhabitants of French regions and towns ("les normands fourbes et menteurs... les poitevins galants et railleurs...") and various peoples (2 ff. removed in this section). There is no logical order in this collection, which contains lists of fairs and markets, chronological lists, hagiographical lists; notes on the quality of different woods and manures, the origin of precious stones, geographical notes, observations on fish and poultry, the choice of a good cow, sugar, wheat, vine cultivation...
Bound at the beginning of the volume are 66 disparate pages from an Almanach de Milan (Bruxelles, Léonard, 1726).
