[9]-16 (suite de l'Avis), fr., pl., contemporary red morocco, smooth spine decorated with small irons, gilt title and tomaison, triple gilt fillet edging the covers, with small angular fleurons, gilt fillet at the edges, interior roulette, gilt edges with gilt irons with interlac motifs, (corners slightly crushed, tears restored t.2 p. 295-296; qq. ff. browned).
Famous edition of the Fermiers généraux, who commissioned it; one of the finest illustrated books of the 18th century, and Eisen's masterpiece.
The illustration includes 2 portraits, that of La Fontaine after Hyacinthe Rigaud, and that of Eisen after Vispré, both etched by Ficquet, and 80 figures by Eisen, etched by Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse, Flipart, Lemire, Leveau, Longueil and Ouvrier, 4 vignettes and 53 culs-de-lampe after Pierre Ph. Choffard, the last of which contains his portrait.
First edition copy, including the Mona Lisa with the two figures omitted from the other states, the figures of the Cas de conscience (II, p. 143) and the Diable de Papefiguière (II, p. 149) in the uncovered state, Le Remède with the floor, bed and curtains decorated (vol. II, p. 259), the Rossignol in the finished uncovered state (vol.II, p.294).
