NON VENU /// VOLTAIRE. Oeuvres complètes. [Kehl], de l'Impri - Lot 227
NON VENU /// VOLTAIRE. Oeuvres complètes. [Kehl], de l'Imprimerie de la Société Littéraire-Typographique, 1784-1789. 70 vol. in-8, uniform binding circa 1800, fawn shagreened basane, ornate smooth spine, red title-pieces and tomaison, gilt roulette edging the boards and counter-pieces, gilt fillet at the edges, gilt edges (wear to bindings including rubbing, st. headbands worn, a few corners dulled; rare interior defects including sporadic browning, brown stain on first few leaves of vol. LXX affecting pl. and title). Unquestionably the most famous edition of Voltaire's complete works. Published by Beaumarchais, it contains most of Voltaire's correspondence in its original edition. A large-margin copy on laid paper. Only copies on large paper include the full illustration, which consists of : 1 title-frontispiece with a bust of Voltaire by Moreau, a dedication with a portrait of Fr.-Guillaume by Pourbus, and 93 figures by Moreau interpreted by various engravers, 14 portraits; as well as 14 folding plates of physics. This copy contains 90 (out of 93) figures engraved after Moreau (the 4 plates of vol. XIV are missing, but one plate appears at the head of vol. LXX); Cohen indicates 14 portraits present here, as well as the physics plates, "and 5 additional portraits", which do not appear in this copy. The title-frontispiece of vol. 1 is here replaced by a portrait of Voltaire engraved by P. A. Tardieu after Largillière. Two plates not mentioned by Cohen appear in this copy: a battle plan relating to Russia (t. XXIV), and a folding table of Voltaire's works (t. LXX). "This suite is one of Moreau's masterpieces, and is sustained without fail from one end to the other for nearly a hundred compositions". (Cohen, 1042-1046).
