Jutta CUNY (1940-1983). - Lot 78
Jutta CUNY (1940-1983). Glass column, circa 1980. Wood, glass and light. Label on base and label on polished glass support "Jutta CUNY n°31". 146 × 54 × 37 cm. Glass colone rests on a wooden base and column, topped by a wooden frame that opens with four flaps onto two sandblasted industrial flat glass slabs, leaning against each other. A light system illuminates the two polished glass panels from the base. (In working order. Wear on the wood) Born in Berlin in 1940, Jutta Cuny became a naturalized French citizen and died in Docelles, Vosges, in 1983. Jutta Cuny devoted herself to the technique of sandblasted glass around 1976, until her accidental death in 1983. Several of her works have entered French public collections: at the MAD and on deposit at the FNAC in Rouen, and are regularly exhibited, including Grand affrontement-pénétration, dated 1979, on deposit since 1985 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (inv. F2284), presented in 2015 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs as part of the exhibition Trésors de sable et de feu. Two of these sculptures were acquired from the Gérard Labie (1983) and Chiara Scremini (1988) galleries, and can be compared with the Glass Column. The Jutta Cuny-Franz Foundation in Düsseldorf was set up in 1984 on the initiative of the artist's mother. It preserves several of her works and has supported artists who use glass in their work with the Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Prize, awarded every two years for the past twenty years.
