BJORN WECKSTRÖM "Barbarella" necklace, sculpture pendant and - Lot 28
BJORN WECKSTRÖM "Barbarella" necklace, sculpture pendant and articulated chain from the Space Silver series, 925‰ silver, signed (BW), master hallmark. 1969 model issued by Lapponia from 1973, Finland. Gross weight: 54.470 g. Bibliography: Similar model reproduced in Modern Scandinavian design, Charlotte and Peter Fiell, Magnus Englund, Laurence King Publishing, London, 2017, page 522. Finnish designer, sculptor, goldsmith and jewelry creator Bjorn Weckström has devoted himself to sculpture since the 1980s. His powerfully curved jewels take on the appearance of a solidified block of ice, where the precious metal is treated as a rocky surface, close to the nugget or fusion of the material. They wonderfully convey the raw beauty of the far north and the harshness of the Finnish winter. The Barbarella necklace, created for the famous Princess Leila in George Lucas' first Star Wars film, transposes into jewelry the evocation of a lunar landscape or planetoid from the imagination of the conquest of space. He also used acrylics, whose transparency he combined with organic silver shapes for his famous Space collection in 1975. His work can be seen at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Helsinki and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
