[Genealogy]. Genealogy of the Counts of Vermandois. - Lot 114
[Genealogy]. Genealogy of the Counts of Vermandois.
Impressive genealogical table of the Counts of Vermandois, from the 19th century to 1806.
S.l., October 1806.
1 broadsheet (65x98cm).
Brown, orange and red inks, bound cursive, round, very legible. Sold as is: a few holes at the folds, and a tear with loss in the lower right-hand corner. The ink, particularly the colored inks, has faded in some places. Later handwritten inscription on verso of table.
This large genealogical table of the Counts of Vermandois, drawn up during the Empire, falsely attributes the origin of this county to King Henry I of France (who is marked at the head of the table), through his sons Philip I and Hugh the Great.
If Hugues was indeed Count of Vermandois, it was through his wife, Adélaïde, daughter of Herbert IV, Count of Vermandois.
Although partly false, this table is nonetheless a fine historical document, and the person who drew it up took care, either to make it easier to read and better differentiate the branches, or to make it more attractive, to mark the names with different inks.
