First cover gilded with the coat of arms of France. Top edge gilt. Contemporary binding. 5-CCCXLVII pages, color frontispiece depicting Saint Louis, and 5 off-text black woodcuts. A very fine limited edition, one of only 1650 copies on vellum (n°1347), of the "Livre des Saintes Paroles et des Bons Faits de notre Saint Roi Louis", by Jean, seigneur de Joinville. This is the very first biography of Louis IX, known as Saint Louis, whom Joinville knew personally, as he was his confidant during the Seventh Crusade. Although not a historian's text as such, it is an extremely valuable source of information, both on the life of Saint Louis and on the thinking of the men of the time. Translated by André Mary, and illustrated with a color frontispiece and black woodcuts by Sonia Lewitska. Binding slightly rubbed. Leather straps complete, although some are shorter than others. The blue coat of arms of France on the front cover is slightly faded, the handwritten inscription on the spine is in perfect condition.
