Manuscript. Deed relating to a relative appointement issued - Lot 417
Manuscript. Deed relating to a relative appointement issued by Sinibaldo Doria [COMTAT VENAISSIN]. [AVIGNON]. Deed on parchment, in Latin Papal chancery script, large initial S cadelé and highlighted in pink and violet Avignon, dated February 8, 1710 Deed issued by Sinibaldo Doria (Sinibaldus de Auria), cardinal (1664-1733), officer of the Papal States, papal vice-legate of Avignon from 1706 to 1711, with name of deed recipient partly redacted, replaced by the name Nicolas de Labarre (3rd line). Deed concerning a military appointement [Sinibaldo Doria was appointed in Avignon to raise troops between 1708 and 1711 to defend the Papal States during the War of Spanish Succession]. Note on the back, with the name "Crousnilhon p. secret", a family from Comtat Venaissin, probably the name of a proto-apostolic secretary. Document folded, stains to parchment. Analysis and quotation on the back of the deed. Dimensions: folded, 230 x 240 mm; unfolded, 450 x 240 mm - Seal dimensions: 100 x 70 mm. Oval red wax seal inserted in a metal case suspended on cords (affixed after?), with two coats of arms, the first pontifical (Or, three pals gules: Benedict XIV, pope from 1740 to 1758) [not those of Clement XI, pope from 1700 to 1721], the second surmounted by a cardinal's hat. The coat of arms below that of Benedict XIV is said to belong to Pasquale Acquaviva d'Aragona, vice-legate in Avignon from 1744 to 1754. This would explain the redaction of the initial name: we are probably dealing with an acté issued under the pontificate of Clement XI by Sinibaldo Doria, taken up and adapted some time later in favor of "Nicolas de Labarre" under the pontificate of Benedict XIV.
