First French edition of this work by physician Jacques-Bénigne Winslow (1669-1760), translated and commented by Jean-Jacques Bruhier, dealing with how to ascertain the death of an individual in order to avoid burying him alive.
Bruhier proposes the distinction between apparent death and intermediate death, and concludes that the only way to confirm an individual's death is to observe its putrefaction. These observations opened the door to the study and practice of resuscitation.
