ANDRY DE BOISREGARD, Nicolas and HUMBLOT. Orthopédie ou l'Art de prévenir et de corriger dans les enfans les difformités du corps. Published in Paris by Veuve Alix and Lambert & Durand in 1741. In 2 volumes of In octavo / In-8 format. Brown basane. Spine ribbed, with gilded bands and fleurons. Red edges. XCVIII+345; V+366+47+119 pages, including 13 plates h. -t. First edition of this major work by physician Nicolas Andry de Boisregard (1658-1742), inventor of orthopedics. This richly illustrated work deals with the various deformities that can affect children, and how to correct them. Among the cases covered are physical deformities such as harelip and limb asymmetry, as well as neurological conditions such as stammering. There are also curious "deformities", such as eyebrows "on top of each other", sweaty hands or shiny complexions. The work is enhanced by thirteen plates engraved by Guélard after Humblot, including an allegorical frontispiece. Both volumes are housed in mismatched period bindings in the same spirit. Excellent condition. Interiors clean and bright. Solid bindings.
