Attributed to Andrea SOLDI (1703 - 1771). - Lot 11
Attributed to Andrea SOLDI (1703 - 1771). Portrait of Armand Aubergy (1701-1751) painted in Aleppo carrying a cup of coffee. Canvas. Titled and dated on the reverse "Armand Auberge / peint à Alep en 1733". 94 × 73 cm. (Old restorations) Aleppo was the second-largest trading city in the Ottoman Empire at the time. We would like to thank Catherine Vigne for having identified the model and for having sent us the article on it in her book written in collaboration with Anne Mézin, Les Français au Levant et en Barbarie de François Ier à Bonaparte, to be published by Geuthner in autumn 2025. The painting will be reproduced there: "Joseph Armand Aubergy, born in Marseille on February 9, 1701, was the son of Georges Aubergy and Elisabeth Bouffier, and brother of Barthélémy Aubergy. He was a merchant authorized to reside in Aleppo on May 7, 1722 to work as a clerk for Bernard et Cie négociants; authorized to continue his residence as a merchant on November 17, 1729; still in Aleppo in June 1735, associated with Charles Conil under the name Conil et Aubergy; made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in April 1737, where he is listed on April 19, 1737 in the register of pilgrims to the Custody of Jerusalem. He is still mentioned in Aleppo in 1738, then returned to Marseille, where he remained his brother's major until the end of his residence in 1751.
