GIRAUDOUX, Jean. Prayer on the Eiffel Tower. - Lot 117
GIRAUDOUX, Jean. Prayer on the Eiffel Tower. Published in Paris by Emile-Paul frères in 1923. In twelve / In-12 paperback. 37 pages. Illustrated front cover. Spine blinded and lightened. Fresh interior. First edition. One of 900 copies on Blanchet-Kléber laid paper, this one no. 237. Autograph letter signed "à Jacques Benoist-Méchin sympathique hommage". "In 1923, Giraudoux wrote "Prière sur la tour Eiffel" (Prayer on the Eiffel Tower), a text that was reprinted in 1924 in Juliette au pays des hommes (Juliette in the Land of Men). The Tower enabled him to evoke Paris, a spiritual and moral territory rather than a physical one. The text moves from Paris seen from above to Giraudoux, and ends with Giraudoux proclaiming his vocation as a writer. The Tower is a pretext for discovering Paris, and the Tower and Paris are pretexts for discovering oneself." (Source Cahiers Jean Giraudoux) Pleasant copy of this personal text with a signed autograph dispatch to the historian Benoist Méchin.
