Following the assassination of King Henri IV and the slander levelled against the Jesuit Order, Father Pierre Coton, confessor to Henri IV, wrote a declaratory letter to show the Jesuits' complete loyalty to the French crown and to exonerate them in the case of Ravaillac's murder.
In response to this letter, a violent anonymous pamphlet entitled Anti-Coton ou Réfutation de la Lettre déclaratoire du père Coton began circulating in September 1610. A lively polemic ensued, leading to the publication of a number of libels and writings in favor of the Jesuits.
We have here an edition of this "Anti-Coton", spelled "Anti-Cotton", preceded by a "Dissertation historique et critique sur l'anti-Cotton".
Very unusual, in a pleasant binding.
