BURTY (Philippe). ROBAUDI (Alcide). Pas de lendemain. A deli - Lot 52
BURTY (Philippe). ROBAUDI (Alcide). Pas de lendemain. A delightful copy of this rare text, fully illustrated with original watercolors by Alcide Robaudi, in a pleasant lined binding by Marius Michel. Paris, chez l'Auteur [J. Claye imp.],1869. Small in-4 (20 × 16 cm), 34pp, full green morocco, boards framed with a triple gilt fillet with geometric pattern, top board decorated with a floral mosaic of garnet, brown and black morocco, 5-nerved spine, gilt edges, brown morocco lined endpapers, framed with a triple gilt fillet and a black mosaic interior floral frieze, silk-covered double endpapers, covers preserved (Marius Michel). Dark green morocco-lined cardboard case, fresh interior, untrimmed, spine slightly faded. Illustrated with a finely etched frontispiece by Edmond Morin. First edition, printed in a very small number "for the author's own use". A nominative copy on laid paper (after 16 Chine), with a signed autograph note from the author to "his dear Paul Mand[y]? "This copy was INTEGRALLY AQUARELLED BY ALCIDE THÉOPHILE ROBAUDI, a famous French painter and illustrator of Orientalist inspiration, a pupil of Gérôme, who illustrated numerous luxury editions and bibliophile copies in the late 19th century. Burty's charming short story tells of a young man and a young woman's gallant, one-night stand in the Auvergne countryside. It is dedicated to Sainte-Beuve (dedication page) and is without doubt the finest copy of this text. Provenance: - Paul Mantz (1821-1895), (E.A.S. from the author). Nineteenth-century art historian, friend of Burty from the 1850s - Ex-libris E.R. (unidentified).
