KEINEN (Imao). Keinen Kachō Gafu. [Collection of flower and bird paintings]. Superb book of Meiji Era prints illustrated with 63 ornithological and botanical compositions in color, by one of the leading Japanese artists of the time. [Kyoto, Nishimura Sôzaemon, 1892?]. 2 vol. (37 × 26 cm) paperback, Japanese binding (mauve thread). Covers stained and pitted. Illustrated with 63 color prints, some double-page, all numbered. Originally published in 4 volumes: one for each season. We present here Spring and Summer. A native of Kyoto, Keinen Imao (1845-1924) spearheaded the shin-hanga movement, the revival of woodblock printing. In 1904, he was appointed Imperial Household Artist. We present here his main work, Keinen Kachō Gafu (景年花鳥畫譜).
