One volume in quarto / In-4 format. Half beige basane. Romantic-inspired spine. Cold-stamped boards. All edges gilt. (5)+LXVI+(3)+472+(1) pages, 55 engraved plates. Edges and spine rubbed. Freckles in places, otherwise good condition. First edition, complete with its 55 out-of-text engravings, 4 of them enhanced in watercolor. It also contains 110 illustrations in the text, a frontispiece portrait of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707-1788, French naturalist), a portrait of Georges Cuvier and a fold-out map of the garden. A charming book that takes us on a mid-century tour of the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes.
