Red half-cartonnage with corners. Gilt bindings. Red edges with white polka dots. Later binding. 516+(2) pages, with 88 full-page steel-engraved plates. Some foxing. Two plates missing. With frontispiece entitled "the devil's hand". Phrenology is the science of the link between character and facial lines, very much in vogue at the time of this publication.
