First cover illustrated in color, depicting a sixteenth-century intellectual. Approximately 60 phototype portraits and their biographies. Some parts in German or Italian. Unstuck flyleaf revealing a photograph. Three biographies missing, binding rubbed but central illustration untouched, interior fresh. Interesting collection of portraits of 60 important figures from the scientific world of the late 19th century, reproducing their full-page photographs phototypically. Biographies are mostly in French, but in German or Italian if the person featured is of that nationality. Illustrious men include Presidents Fallières and Loubet, Louis Pasteur, Prefect Lépine and the Countess de Martel (under the pen name Gyp).
