[MARSY, François-Marie de and ROBINET, Jean-Baptiste-René.] - Lot 281
[MARSY, François-Marie de and ROBINET, Jean-Baptiste-René.] Analyse raisonnée de Bayle ou Abrégé Méthodique de ses ouvrages, particulièrement de son Dictionnaire historique et critique, dont les Remarques ont été fondues dans le Texte, pour former un corps instructif et agréable de lectures suivies. Published in London [Paris] without mention of publisher, between 1755 and 1773. In twelve / In-12 format (167 x 95 mm). Fawn calf, smooth spine with horizontal gilt fillets and cardinal morocco title-pieces, compartments decorated with small gilt thistle irons, cold-framed boards, gilt lace at the edges, guilloche-trimmed headpieces, red edges. 1 f.n.ch., XXXVI, 429 pages; 2 f.n.ch., IV, 467 pages; XX, 482 pages; 2 f.n.ch., XX, 460 pages; 2 f.n.ch., CLXXX, 4 f.n.ch., 286 pages, 2 f.n.ch.; XX, 407 pages; XVI, 440 pages; XII, 468 pages, a frontispiece portrait of Bayle in the first volume. Bindings rubbed, headbands generally worn, some with leather missing (V, VI and VII), corners dulled, accident to first cover of volume I, spine split in volume VII, pages browned, some foxing, restoration without missing in volume VII (p.23). Reunion of the eight volumes that make up Bayle's Analyse raisonnée. The first four volumes, compiled and published in 1755 by Abbé de Marsy, were the subject of considerable controversy at the time of their publication: immediately put on the index for their anti-religious character, their author was imprisoned. Illegible handwritten inscription at the end of volume VI. A handsome gathering in an almost uniform binding, a sign of the time that has elapsed between the publication of the two series.
