Founded in 1841 by brothers Hector and Charles Maquet, Maquet specialized in luxury leather goods and stationery. It became a licensed supplier to Empress Eugénie and several European courts. Throughout its history, Maquet has won numerous prizes and medals at world fairs. The company also markets tobacco products, including cigarette lighters and cigar and cigarette boxes. At the beginning of the 20th century, it produced a number of friction lighters based on Chinese snuffboxes. As part of the orientalist trend in the decorative arts at the time, the company specialized in assembled objects using antique elements.
