French school of the 17th century.
Emblem of Charles II of Spain and Marie Louise d'Orléans.
Gouache with painted silver and gold highlights on vellum.
15 × 48.5 cm.
(Splinters, small holes and traces of restoration).
The inscription on the central phylactery, "INSERTA CORONAE FERT DECUS" ("Inserted in the crown, it brings it all its brilliance"), is the emblem of the union of two coats of arms - the Castilian royal family (the castle and the lion rampant in gold on a red background) and the French royal family (the fleur-de-lys in gold on an azure background and the ermine).
The same emblem is found on a door top in the Grande Galerie d'Apollon at the Château de Saint Cloud: "Au-dessus de la porte. - Medallion without figure. Emblem: a pearl in a shell on the edge of the sea, with this motto: INSERTA CORONA DAT DECVS. (see MM. Philippe de Saint-Albin and Armand Durantin, Palais de Saint- Cloud, résidence impériale : domaine de la Couronne, ed. Librairie centrale,1864, p.134).
Our warmest thanks to Mr. Jean-Yves Franch for his invaluable contribution to the identification of the emblems.
