First edition of one of the most beautiful and impressive anatomical atlases of its century. Published over 15 years in 100 issues, "ce bel ouvrage" (Brunet, I, 1179) is richly illustrated with 726 black lithographed plates measuring 42 x 31 cm, based on drawings by Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871).
The work is divided into three parts: descriptive anatomy (volumes 1 to 5), surgical anatomy and operating manual (volumes 6 and 7) and philosophical, general and microscopic anatomy (volume 8). Each volume has a text volume and a plate volume, in which each plate is accompanied on the previous page by explanations. Complete with all plates, the set includes volume 7 bis.
More than just an anatomy and surgery manual, this is a veritable artistic suite. Strikingly realistic, the author of the plates has taken pleasure in going beyond classic mechanical reproduction to endow some of the subjects with expression and a sensitive personality.
Superb collection of period anatomical lithographs, in good condition.
