LONGUS. Daphnis and Chloe. Translation by Amyot. Published in Paris by Librairie des Bibliophiles in 1872. 1 vol. In-12, blue half-maroquin with corners edged with gold fillet, spine with false nerves underlined by gilt stippling, double-filleted boxes with gilt friezes, gilt lettering, gilt head. Contemporary binding (Smeers). XI (avertissement, sommaire), 194 pp. 1 f. (table), several designs in bands, lettering and caps, etched by Flameng after Émile Lévy or woodcut by Rouget and Sargent after Giacomelli. Text in red frame. Rubbing to headpieces, spines, cuts and corners, one lack in the lower corner of the second plate, spine slightly faded. Pale and small brown spots. Beautiful edition of this bucolic novel by the Greek author Longus, narrating a love story between two teenagers. It features compositions by Émile Lévy etched by Flameng and woodcuts by Giacomelli engraved by Rouget and Sargent. Limited edition of 550 copies, this being one of 500 on Hollande wove paper. A charming copy, despite a few flaws, in a signed half-maroquin binding with corners.
