MASSILLON, Jean-Baptiste. OEuvres de Massillon, évêque de Cl - Lot 211
MASSILLON, Jean-Baptiste. OEuvres de Massillon, évêque de Clermont. Paris, Lefèvre, 1833. 2 volumes in 2 vols. in-4. Emerald half-maroquin with corners, smooth spines decorated with cold-stamped Gothic motifs and gilt fleurons and frames, gilt fillet on margins. X+768 and 720 pages, frontispiece portrait of the author. Spine sunned (pistachio), light rubbing at the edges, some foxing on the first few pages and scarce in the margins thereafter. In the tradition of Bossuet and Fénelon, of whom he was a contemporary, Jean-Baptiste Massillon (1663-1742), a great preacher who had already preached before Louis XIV, is the author of several texts and religious thoughts, here brought together in two volumes. These are based on the 1745 edition of his complete works, from manuscripts collected by his own nephew. "It is to the heart that Massillon speaks, it is the heart that he affects and interests" (preface to the 1745 edition): his work is not only Catholic or liturgical, it is moral and philosophical. Interesting texts that deserve to be better known in an elegant Romantic period binding.
