[MINIATURE] SLIGHT, Henry. True Stories of H. M. Ship Royal - Lot 223
[MINIATURE] SLIGHT, Henry. True Stories of H. M. Ship Royal George from 1746 to 1841. Published by E. Hartnall at Ryde in 1841. In-32, black half leather, straight spine framed lengthwise with gilt title "Relic of the Royal George". inlaid wood boards with central decoration, all edges gilt. 120 pp. 3 plates out of text. Slight yellowing, some foxing. Wood on second board split. First edition of this account of the sinking of the HMS Royal George in a delightful inlaid binding. Launched in 1756 at Woolwich, HMS Royal George was the largest warship of her time, serving in both the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. This colossal vessel sank in 1782, marking one of the UK's greatest naval disasters, taking the lives of over 800 people. In this compilation of short stories, Henry Slight traces the ship's history from the early days of her construction to the attempts to salvage her after her sinking. The story is enhanced by engraved plates, including two showing the maneuvers used to raise the wreck. An excellent miniature book.
