CHARLET, Nicolas-Toussaint. 8 copper plates by Nicolas Touss - Lot 23
CHARLET, Nicolas-Toussaint. 8 copper plates by Nicolas Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845). Etched copper, various sizes (190 x 140 mm to 270 x 210 mm). Micro-scratches, some traces of oxidation. Rare etched plates by Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845). Three are from a "Nouvelle Encyclopédie" work, the other four probably from the "Recueil de 24 pièces gravées à l'Eau-forte" published in Paris by Blaisot in 1841, of which the title-page plate is part of the set. The various subjects depict children and soldiers, probably from the late Ancien Régime, as well as a grognard or more simply picturesque characters. Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet was a famous French painter and lithographer of the first half of the 19th century, known for his portraits of soldiers and battle scenes, notably of the Empire and Revolution. One plate is signed by an author named "Blaisot" and depicts contemporary soldiers (Louis-Philippe) and an old lady entertained by a puppet show. Uncommon and beautiful set of brass.
