[DOGON] GRIAULE, Marcel. Dogon masks. - Lot 83
[DOGON] GRIAULE, Marcel. Dogon masks. Paris, Institut d'ethnologie de l'Université de Paris, 1938. In-4, full fir green publisher's percaline. VIII - 2 ff.n.ch. (map and errata) - 896 pages - 2 ff.n.ch. (catalog) - XXXII plates. Hinges broken, small marks on percaline, spine slightly damaged. In-depth study by ethnologist Marcel Griaule, deputy director of the ethnology laboratory at the École des Hautes Études, on the Dogons, their rituals and the place occupied by their famous masks. This imposing work is the result of several ethnographic missions, from 1928 to 1937, in Abyssinia, from Dakar to Djibouti (with Michel Leiris, who wrote "L'Afrique fantôme" on this occasion), in the Sahara as far as Sudan and Cameroon. Marcel Griaule translates and narrates the Dogon myths in detail, dwelling at length on the rituals of the Sigui, Sanga (funerals) and Dama (mourning) ceremonies. The study is richly illustrated with reproductions of paintings, masks and expedition photographs. The disc, on which you can listen to the music of the Kagandige dance to the rhythm of the same name, and the Gona dance of the Kanaga mask (kili boy rhythm), is complete. Autograph letter from the author on the title page to Monseigneur Sylvain Gribaut. Fair condition of binding, fresh interior.
