[SIERRA LEONE - GUINEA] TAGLIAFERRI, Aldo and HAMMACHER, Arn - Lot 144

[SIERRA LEONE - GUINEA] TAGLIAFERRI, Aldo and HAMMACHER, Arno. Fabulous Ancestors. Stone carvings from Sierra Leone & Guinea. Milan, Editions Il Polifilo, 1974. In-8, paperback, illustrated cover with flaps. 195 pages. Numerous black photographs out of text. In English. Slight black marks on cover, last few pages a little dog-eared, photo plates slightly yellowed at margins. Investigation into the buried stone sculptures of Guinea or Sierra Leone (called "nomoli" or "pomtan"). Were they reliquaries of ancestors or effigies of former landowners? The authors of this richly illustrated essay discuss each hypothesis, tracing the portrait of this territory that Portuguese navigators called "the Kingdom of the Sapes". Satisfactory condition.
