CASSINI de THURY, César-François and CHALMANDRIER, Nicolas [ - Lot 34
CASSINI de THURY, César-François and CHALMANDRIER, Nicolas [XVIIIe]. Cassini map engraved by Nicolas Chalmandrier: Vienne (center) and Deux Sèvres (east) departments.
18 sections mounted on canvas and folded, forming a 92 x 58 cm map engraved and colored at the time.
Sparse but not severe wetness on the spine. Map numbering and handwritten title on spine.
Superb map engraved in the 18th century by Nicolas Chalmandrier, covering part of the Vienne (center) and Deux Sèvres (east) departments, with numerous color highlights: the main towns (Poitiers, Lusignan, Chatellerault, Thenezay) are marked in red watercolor, forests and woods (Moulière, Chatellerault, Pressigny, La Ferrière forests) in green watercolor, roads and paths in yellow and red.
This is sheet no. 67 of the Cassini map, the first set of geometric maps to be drawn on the scale of the French kingdom in the 18th century, a real innovation and a decisive technical advance at the time.
A very fine, finely watercolored copy.
