[SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA]. SKIRA, Albert. Minotaure. Mission Daka - Lot 4
[SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA]. SKIRA, Albert. Minotaure. Mission Dakar-Djibouti. 1931-1933. Paris, Editions Albert Skira, 1933. In-4 paperback, softcover illustrated with a lithograph by Gaston-Louis Roux (1904-1988) in color. 6 ff.n.ch. - 87 pp. - 1 bw. plate, numerous figures, mainly in black. Some foxing on cover margins and spine with small tears, cover slightly soiled, first hinge fragile, slight wetness at bottom of last twenty pages. Rare first edition of what is the second issue of "one of the finest art magazines of the twentieth century and one of the most important surrealist magazines" (Andrébreton.fr). This issue is devoted to the Dakar-Djibouti mission of 1931-1933, the famous French ethnographic expedition led by Marcel Griaule from Senegal to French Somalia, in which the painter Gaston-Louis Roux, who designed the cover, took part. The expedition was particularly interested in the Dogons of Mali. Numerous commented photographic reproductions make up this copy. A rare and highly informative source.
