[AFRICA - ESTAMPES XVIIIe]. PICART, Bernard. Plates from "Cé - Lot 179

[AFRICA - ESTAMPES XVIIIe]. PICART, Bernard. Plates from "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde". 8 engraved plates in-4 (40 x 25 cm), two of which mounted on strong paper. A few marginal annotations of no consequence. Beautiful collection of plates engraved by Bernard Picart (1673-1733) presenting the mores and customs of the Cafre, Hottentot and Guinean peoples, taken from "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (Amsterdam, Jean-Frédéric Bernard, 1723-1737). Four of the plates with the tomes indicated in the margin probably come from the Prudhomme edition (Paris, 1807-1810). A renowned engraver, Picart provides fine depictions of childbirth, funerals, weddings and torture scenes for this major work. A very fine set.
