LA FONTAINE, Jean de and EISEN, Charles-Dominique-Joseph. Co - Lot 38
LA FONTAINE, Jean de and EISEN, Charles-Dominique-Joseph. Contes et nouvelles en vers. Amsterdam, s.n., 1764. 2 volumes, in-12, full red basane, ribbed spines decorated with gilt small irons and central gilt fleurons, boards decorated with gilt roulettes and fleurons, inner gilt roulettes on the chasses, gilt edges. X - (2 ff.n.ch.) - 214 - 2 ff.n.ch. ; VIII - 2 ff.n.ch. - 254 - (2 ff.n.ch.) pages. 2 frontispieces, 79 black steel engravings and 60 engraved lamp-heads. Joints rubbed, small scratches on boards. Superb edition, with 79 engravings after Charles Eisein and 60 culs de lampe, some after Choffard. Counterfeit of the famous Fermiers Généraux edition, published two years earlier (Cohen "Guide de l'amateur de livres à vignettes du XVIIIe). These libertine tales in verse, gleaned by the great fabulist from Boccaccio, Ariosto, the anonymous collection "Cent nouvelles nouvelles" and Bonaventure des Périers, were somewhat overshadowed by 17th-century modesty and, later, 19th-century moralism, but were a resounding success in the 18th century. Readers will discover such tasty tales as "La Mandragore", "Le Remède", "La Joconde" and "La Gageure des trois commères". Fine copies, in charming bindings, in good condition.
