[POITOU] BOUCHEUL, Joseph and MOULIN, Charles du. Coûtumier - Lot 56
[POITOU] BOUCHEUL, Joseph and MOULIN, Charles du. Coûtumier géneral ou corps et compilation de tous les commentateurs sur la coûtume du comté et pays de Poitou. Poitiers, Jacques Faulcon, 1727. 2 large volumes in-folio, brown speckled basane, spine ribbed, central fleuron and corner fleurons gilded in a double frame on the entrenerfs, title and tomaison gilded on blond and burgundy morocco leather, red speckled edges. Contemporary binding. 4 ff.n.ch., XXX and 961 pp. ; 2 ff. 886 pp. and 1 f. (approbation), 1 engraved title vignette (repeated in vol. 2), 1 copper-engraved frontispiece portrait by Claude Duflos of Gui André, Comte de Laval, dated 1727, headbands, lettering and endpapers. Title printed in black and red, printed on two columns. Bindings rubbed, browning on the boards of volume 2, 2 jaws slightly split and headbands worn on volume 1, some spotting on the boards and significant leather loss on the edges. Pages slightly wrinkled, rare foxing and dampening, some marginal annotations from the period. First edition of this in-depth, scholarly analysis of Poitevin custom by Joseph Boucheul (1639-1706), including comments by his predecessors, in particular Charles Dumoulin and Claude de Ferrière, and comparisons with neighboring regions such as Angoumois, Touraine and La Rochelle. No other original analysis of Poitou custom was produced after him. The work was published more than twenty years after Joseph Boucheul's death, by his son, with the Poitevin bookseller and printer Jacques Faulcon in 1727, whose mark featuring an eagle, or rather a hawk, is engraved as a vignette on both titles. The hawk/eagle was a secondary reference to the author, whose reputation earned him the nickname "the eagle of his time". [Dupin, II. p.246 n°837-14]. A fine copy, complete with the fine portrait engraved on copper by Claude Duflos (1665-1727) shortly before his death, depicting Gui-André, comte de Laval, to whom the work is dedicated. This copy contains 4 handwritten pages (black ink, cursive script) dating from the 18th century and signed by a certain "P.C. Dufour" on a double leaf in-4 (20x32 cm). Handwritten bookplate dated 1741 on title. A solid contemporary copy, complete in 2 volumes, inside quite fresh.
