[HURTADO DE MENDOZA, Diego]. Adventures and mischief of Laza - Lot 86
[HURTADO DE MENDOZA, Diego]. Adventures and mischief of Lazarille de Tormes, written by himself. Paris, Didot jeune, 1801. In-8, speckled mahogany basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleuron fillets, boards decorated with gilt framing, sides decorated with gilt fillet, marbled edges. VIII (fx-t., frontispiece, t., preface), 154 pp. fx-t., t., 182 pp. 40 plates. Joints split. Some brown spots. Fine edition of this major Spanish work, the founder of the picaresque novel. Although its attribution is uncertain, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza (1503-1575) is generally suggested as the father of these adventures. The set is illustrated with compositions by Ransonnette, a pupil of Choffard, and a frontispiece portrait of the protagonist by the same artist. A fine copy with wide margins, nicely set.
