FRANCE, Anatole and FREIDA, Raphaël. Thaïs. - Lot 87
FRANCE, Anatole and FREIDA, Raphaël. Thaïs. Paris, A. Plicque & Cie, 1924. In-4, full fawn calf, four-ribbed spine, boxes with cold-stamped fillets, first cover decorated with a cold-stamped lotus design (using the title of the first chapter), second cover decorated with a threaded geometric design, fine inner border of the same decorated with a triple gilt fillet, tobacco-brown moiré silk lining and endpapers, combed double endpapers, guilloche-covered headpieces, gilt fillet at the edges, gilt headband, covers and spine preserved, slipcase lined with the same. Signed Flammarion binding 209 pages; 21 engravings in black, including 1 frontispiece, 8 plates, headbands, vignettes and endpapers. Spine uniformly faded, some light rubbing to boards. Edition illustrated with 21 original black compositions by Raphaël Freida, 9 of which are full-page. Limited edition of 781 copies, this one of 700 on Rives vellum (no. 614). A novel of a double conversion: that of the eponymous courtesan to Christianity and that of the anchorite Paphnuce to love, this edition of Thaïs is admirably illustrated by Raphaël Freida, whose harsh brushstrokes capture the atmosphere and mood of the text. [Carteret, IV, 171]. A very fine, fresh copy in a pleasant Flammarion binding.
