ROZIER, François. Nouveau cours complet d'agriculture théorique et pratique, Contenant la grande et la petite Culture, l'Economie rurale et domestique, la Médecine vétérinaire, etc.; ou Dictionnaire raisonné et universel d'agriculture. Paris, Deterville, 1809. 13 volumes, in-8, havana half-basanes, smooth spines decorated with gilt fleurons, garlands and fillets, guilloche headpieces, black leather titles and endpapers. Approx. 500 pages per volume. Numerous plates of intaglio diagrams, including several fold-outs. Joints rubbed, a few stains on the bindings, wormholes on the spine of volume 8, splintering on the spine of volume 11, rubbed headbands and the headband of volume 3 partially blown off, paper losses on the boards, scattered foxing, especially on the title pages. Complete thirteen-volume edition of this reasoned and universal dictionary of agriculture, drafted along the lines of Abbé Rozier's, from which all articles whose relevance and truth have been proven by experience have been retained. A dictionary written by members of the Société d'agriculture de l'Institut de France and illustrated with numerous figures in intaglio. An excellent overview of agricultural knowledge at the end of the 18th century, with contributions from Parmentier, Thouin, Chaptal, Dussieux and many others. In 1780, François Rozier acquired the Beauséjour estate near Bézier, where he wrote this famous work, the fruit of numerous agronomic and botanical observations and experiments. In 1786, he returned to Lyon, where he had already taught at the first veterinary school, to head the practical school of agriculture. Killed at home by a bomb in 1793, he had played an active role during the Revolution as constitutional priest of Saint-Polycarpe de Lyon. A fine set, in good condition overall, with fresh interiors.
