PLUTARCH and MAISTRE, Joseph de. Délais de la justice divine - Lot 119
PLUTARCH and MAISTRE, Joseph de. Délais de la justice divine, dans la punition des coupables. Lyon, J.B. Pélagaud et Cie, 1845. In-8, navy blue half-basane, smooth spine with two gilt fleurons, garlands and braces, with two red leather pieces, including the title page. XVI - 202 ; VI - 183 pages. Leather loss on spine ends, small paper loss on boards, edges and corners worn, foxing. New edition of the French translation, with additions and notes, by Joseph de Maistre, the great contemptor of the French Revolution and its principles. Followed by Amyot's translation of the same treatise under the title "Pourquoi la justice divine différère la punition des maléfices?" Plutarch, albeit a non-Christian and priest of Delphi, develops here a Hellenistic Platonic view of divine providence, conferring on Apollo and his pure light attributes of transcendence that would bring him closer to later Christian thought. This aspect of his philosophy, together with the vigor with which he sets out to refute Epicurean theses, by articulating faith, logos and mythos, will explain the success of this treatise among modern Christian thinkers. Joseph de Maistre's free translation brings this discourse on divine punishment up to date with the disastrous experience of the French Revolution. Attractive contemporary binding.
