NODIER, Charles. The Seven Castles of the King of Bohemia. L - Lot 135
NODIER, Charles. The Seven Castles of the King of Bohemia. Les quatre talismans. Paris, Victor Lecou, 1852. In-12, bradel, full midnight blue basane (later binding), smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, top edge gilt. XXXV - 326 pages. Numerous woodcuts and black lettering in text. Some foxing. Edition illustrated with numerous woodcuts after Tony Johannot. An enigmatic work, supposed to narrate a trip to Bohemia that never took place. A bibliophile and scholar, fascinated by fantasy, fairies, vampires and demons, Charles Nodier pastiche here Diderot's "Jacques le fataliste" or Sterne's "Tristam Shandy". Preceded by "Quatre talismans", in which four brothers receive a magic talisman from a Cyclops genie, and a fascinating preface by the author on "Le fantastique en littérature". Satisfactory condition, good later binding.
