HUGO, Victor. Napoleon the Lesser. - Lot 137
HUGO, Victor. Napoleon the Lesser. London, Jeffs, 1852. In-16, full black leather (later binding), smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets. 385 pages. A few slightly browned and fragile leaves at the beginning of the copy, rare foxing. Published in the year of the first edition of this famous pamphlet written by Victor Hugo, in exile in Brussels in 1952, against Louis Napoléon Bonaparte's coup d'état of December 2, 1951 (Vicaire, IV, 310). Opposing the "little" Napoléon III to the "great" Napoléon I, Hugo accurately chronicles the crimes of the coup d'état and denounces the cowardice of French society and its political and religious elites, quick to kowtow to their new cacique. In return, he sings of the heroic uprisings of resistance to the coup d'état that took place across France. Hugo draws from this event a more general reflection on parliamentarianism and democracy. In good condition.
