RICHEPIN, Jean and POIRSON, M.V.A. Les Blasphèmes. - Lot 138
RICHEPIN, Jean and POIRSON, M.V.A. Les Blasphèmes. Paris, Maurice Dreyfous, 1884. In-4, red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt irons and central gilt fleurons. 344 pages. 2 etchings as frontispiece portraits, 8 etchings with out-of-text remarks, printed. Spine and nerves slightly rubbed, small paper loss on first cover. First edition, illustrated with a portrait by E. de Liphart, with an additional portrait by Henri Lefort and a suite of eight etchings by M.V.A. Poirson. Limited edition of 575 numbered copies, this one of 350 on vellum (n°514). [Vicaire VI, 11-20] A libertarian and rebellious poet of the literary bohemia, Jean Richepin wielded slang and blasphemy with incandescent lyricism, earning the nickname "the Lucretia of the fair" for the casual materialism and swaggering nihilism of this collection. The poet, who had already been imprisoned for a month at Sainte-Pélagie for his previous collection, cries out for the death of the gods and invents a prayer for atheists. Poirson's obscene, blasphemous etchings are reminiscent of the decadent paintings of Félicien Rops and James Ensor. In very good condition.
