GIGOUX, Jean and LESAGE, Alain René. History of Gil Blas de - Lot 140
GIGOUX, Jean and LESAGE, Alain René. History of Gil Blas de Santillane. Paris, Paulin, 1835. In-4, fawn half-basane with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt garlands and fillets, guilloche headpieces, eggplant leather title-pieces, pebbled spine-pieces. 972 pages. 1 black engraved frontispiece, 600 black woodcuts in text, black engraved initials at the beginning of each chapter. Small stains on corners, foxing at beginning and end of copy, two browned leaves. First edition of 600 wood-engraved illustrations after Jean Gigoux by the most skilled artists of the time, such as Lavoignat, Porret and Thompson. A seemingly picaresque tale that hijacks the codes of the genre, Gil Blas climbs all the rungs of the social ladder in 18th-century Spain, from brigands' dens to the salons of high society. An initiatory novel about a hero "at school in the world", to which the painter, illustrator and lithographer Jean Gigoux lends his lively, theatrical style. A fine copy in an elegant contemporary binding.
