ARLINCOURT, Vicomte d'. Le Brasseur Roi. Fourteenth-century - Lot 144
ARLINCOURT, Vicomte d'. Le Brasseur Roi. Fourteenth-century Flemish chronicle. Paris, Ambroise Dupont, 1834. 2 volumes, in-8, fawn half-basanes, false ribbed spines adorned with gilded caissons and fillets, red leather title-pieces, fir green leather cap-pieces, speckled edges. III - 300 ; 324 pages. 2 engraved frontispieces in serpents. Moisture stains on bindings, paper missing from margins of boards, scattered foxing and wetness. Second edition, with two frontispieces by Jules David, of this account of the reign of the brewer King in fourteenth-century Flanders. A morally-oriented account of the maneuvers of an ambitious man of high lineage, who "became a rabble to become royalty, wallowing in the mire to strut his stuff under the purple". A virulent denunciation of demagoguery, not without counter-revolutionary ulterior motives on the part of its author, Charles-Victor Prévost d'Arlincourt, whose father was guillotined in 1794, and who had a career under the Empire, as auditor to the Conseil d'Etat and intendant of the Spanish army, then as maître des requêtes to Louis XVIII. Satisfactory condition.
