LA ROCHEFOUCAULD LIANCOURT, Marquis de. Literary and moral s - Lot 147
LA ROCHEFOUCAULD LIANCOURT, Marquis de. Literary and moral studies of Racine. Paris, Typographie de Morris et Cie, 1860. 2 volumes, in-8, fir green half-basanes, smooth spines decorated with gilt fleurons and fillets, boards decorated with gilt framing decorations, gilt edges. 296 - 86 ; 388 pages. Covers rubbed, corners dulled, rare foxing. A study devoted to Racine's literary and moral studies. The first volume presents the seminal role of Boileau's reading and judgment of Homer in the young Racine's literary formation. Sophocles and Euripides are also extensively discussed. In the second part of the volume, the author transcribes the translations of some of Racine's tragedies by the magistrate Charles-François Quéquet, in Latin verse, in the style of Virgil. The second volume revisits the great tragedian's moral and historical studies, and publishes some of his correspondence with Boileau and the tributes paid to him. Good condition.
