GRANDVILLE. Cent proverbes. - Lot 154
GRANDVILLE. Cent proverbes. Paris, H. Fournier, 1845. In-8, red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed, top edge gilt. 400 pages. 51 black engravings out of text (including 1 frontispiece) and numerous black engravings in text. Engraved headbands and tailpieces. Small paper tears on covers, scattered dampstains, slight black mark on title page. First edition and first printing of the illustrations for this collection of stories illustrating the proverbs of the French language, accompanied by superb and burlesque engravings by Grandville. One hundred proverbs, including "la gourmandise tue plus de gens que l'épée" ("Gluttony kills more people than the sword"), "moine qui demande pour Dieu demande pour deux" ("Monk who asks for God asks for two") and "chaque pottier vante son pot" ("Every potter boasts his pot"), give the various authors (Taxile Delors, Arnould Fremy and Amédée Achard) the opportunity to weave mischievous, sometimes cruel fables with disconcerting punch lines. On page 354, Grandville surreptitiously slips in his self-portrait. A fine copy, in a solid morocco binding.
