[RÉMARD, Charles]. La Chézonomie ou l'art de ch... Poëme did - Lot 155
[RÉMARD, Charles]. La Chézonomie ou l'art de ch... Poëme didactique, en quatre chants. Paris, Merlin, 1806. In-18, half brown basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets. XI - 191 pages. Binding rubbed and stained, jaws cracked, small leather loss on upper headpiece, edges and corners worn, rare foxing. Uncommon first edition. "Poème sur l'art de ch..." (Poem on the art of ch...), sufficient to consecrate the glory of Charles Rémard, poet and librarian, who occupied important administrative functions under the Terror at the offices of the general liquidation. According to Barbier (Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes, Paris, Daffis, 1872, tome 1, column 583/f), he was curator at the Château de Fontainebleau. This four-song poem, dedicated to "the good chieurs of all ranks, ages and sexes" and published "in Scoropolis", boasts didactic precision and erudite virtuosity, invoking the august patronage of the Greeks and Latins, and delivering a wealth of advice to its readers: "Car il ne suffit pas d'avoir la panse pleine, / Il faut en digérant balayer la paundaine" ("For it's not enough to have a full belly, / One must sweep out one's belly while digesting"). It is followed by an extensive set of notes by the author. Satisfactory condition, fresh interior.
